Camp 29

Sparrow Village – Johannesburg | Camp Discovery boundary of Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve Gauteng

February 2013

30 campers spent the weekend away in the bush with Just Footprints, Reach For A Dream Foundation and their volunteers at a Camp Sunshine Camp. During this action-packed, fun weekend, they explored the natural bush environment and were given the opportunity to leave their hospital routine behind and to just be children. They were encouraged to laugh, to make friends, and to realise their dreams. And at night, they sang songs with new friends around the camp fire, where all thoughts of hospitals and treatment were left behind.

Sibling Camp – CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa | Phiri Camp Kwalata in Dinokeng Big Five Game Reserve, Gauteng

March 2013

22 eager and excited campers, siblings of children with cancer-related illnesses, attended the first ever Just Footprints Foundation sibling camp in the amazing wilderness setting of Dinokeng Game Reserve. Here they were not only encouraged to enjoy their environment and meet the wildlife, but were given the space to be who they are and to have fun. Often referred to as the “silent sufferers”, the camp gave them the opportunity to share their feelings and concerns about their sick brother or sister in a safe and contained space amongst professional psychosocial staff and trained volunteers from CHOC.

The Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home | CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa – KZN and The Gateway School Johannesburg

July 2013

57 campers joined us for a 5 day camp at Hibberdene on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. For many of these children it was the first time they had ever been to the ocean. Here they enjoyed fun on the beach, as well as the excitement and adrenalin of walking across the awesome Oribi Gorge suspension bridge. This is thanks to our friends at Port Shepstone Rotary Club. All activities are geared towards providing an opportunity for the campers to learn new skills, develop confidence, enhance their self-esteem and be joyful kids once again, in a wonderful, safe environment: a Just Footprints Camp.

September 2013

60 campers had 5 days of sun, swimming, eating delicious food and most importantly fun. Our camp programme had a common thread of heritage and life skill components and also included a ‘give back to the elderly in the community activity’ where our campers served a delicious lunch to the residents of the TLC old age home in Hammanskraal and entertained them with a concert followed by a tree planting ceremony in the garden of the Home. We could have not done all of this without the support of our funders Maxi’s, The Fish and Chips Co. and their holding Company Taste Holdings who sponsored the camp, as well as the lunch for the elderly.

Gateway School – Johannesburg | Phiri Camp Kwalata in the Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve Gauteng

November 2013

62 campers from the Gateway School on the West Rand spent a weekend with the Just Footprints Foundation in November 2013 learning valuable life skills. Apart from having lots of fun, the children were taught how to plant a vegetable garden in a tyre. Ten vegetable tyres were constructed in a nearby home for the aged, thereby giving the campers the opportunity to also give back to the local community. Other activities included a potjiekos competition, game drives, swimming, a mud bath and a popcorn and movie night under the stars. Sponsorship was generously provided by Scooters Pizza.

December 2013

39 eager campers being treated for cancer and cancer related  illnesses at Red Cross Children’s, Groote Schuur and Tygerberg Hospitals joined in for a 5 day long camp of fun in an amazing setting surrounded by mountains and sea, to participate in an exciting life-changing adventure with our friends from The Constantia Rotary Club. Highlights of this camp was a harbour boat trip on the Southern Cross, a visit to the V&A waterfront with lunch and a thrilling expedition to City Rock and their indoor rock climbing gym.  At camp many new friendships were forged and the children were able to escape from the realities of their health challenges and just be joyful kids once again.

Camp 36

Sizanani Outreach Centre Nkandla | The Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home – KwaZulu-Natal  South Coast

December 2013

The weather in KwaZulu Natal for Just Footprints’ first camp in December was warm and sunny, making for lots of enjoyment on the beach – and sunshine and fun was exactly what was needed for 122 orphaned children for whom the camp was the greatest treat of their lives. The children were drawn from the Sizanani Outreach Programme of the Nkandla district of KZN, a mobile home-based care service in the district that delivers counselling, HIV-testing, peer education, social, medical and legal services. The highlight of the camp was undoubtedly the arrival of Father Christmas with an age-appropriate gift for each child. This was followed by a scrumptious Christmas lunch – the only festive meal the children were likely to have ever received. The six-day camp was sponsored by Independent Newspapers.  Many of the children on the camp had never been out of their home district, so seeing the sea for the first time, travelling to Hibberdene on a bus, and even such a simple activity as stopping at a service station were huge treats, enjoyed to the full by every child.

December 2013

33 more campers from Sizanani Outreach Centre in Nkandla were fortunate to join Camp Footprints over the festive holidays at Hibberdene for fun time away from their challenging circumstances. Beach activities, games and sport, swimming and slippy sliding into the pool were the order of the day. But the huge treat of the 5 day camp was undoubtedly the arrival of a very jovial Father Christmas with a gift for each child. The children were thrilled with their presents as most of them had never had the pleasure of their own special gift….ever! A delicious Christmas lunch was then served with all the trimmings. A memorable and carefree time had by all.
