At Camp Footprints, the magic of camp is enabled by a dedicated JFF facilitation team supported by our carefully screened, vetted (as required by the Child Care Act of South Africa) and trained young adult volunteer camp crew. Each day begins with excitement and movement, campers wake up at 6 a.m., followed by a 7 a.m. game drive or beach excursion or an energising “Wake Up – Shake Up” exercise session set to music. What follows is a full day of intentional learning and play designed not just for fun but to help campers discover, understand and generalise their learning in a way that stays with them long after camp ends. As the sun sets and the campfire crackles, stories are shared, and friendships deepen through cabin chats before lights out at 9:30 p.m. Our camp crew stay with the children in the bungalows, providing comfort and care throughout the night.
Camp Footprints offers an extraordinary escape from illness and hospital beds. For a few days, children shed the weight of their circumstances and step into a world where possibility reigns. Through creative arts, drama, drumming, dance, water sports, cultural excursions and adventure, campers experience confidence and transformation and remind children that anything is possible.
In-Hospital Programmes
Bringing Comfort, Connection, and Camp Magic to Hospital Bedsides
The Camp Footprints In-Hospital Programme is a compassionate extension of Just Footprints Foundation’s mission, delivering joy, healing and meaningful engagement to children receiving care in hospital settings. While some children may not be able to attend our residential or outreach due to medical limitations, this programme ensures they don’t miss out on the transformative spirit of camp.
By bringing playful, purpose-driven experiences directly into paediatric oncology and general paediatric wards, we help children rediscover laughter, creativity, and connection, even in the midst of treatment and recovery, bringing light into even the most challenging spaces, one child at a time.
Why It Matters
Hospital stays can be isolating and emotionally challenging for children and their families. Our In-Hospital Programme offers:
- A break from routine and clinical environments
- Opportunities for self-expression and emotional release
- Moments of connection between children, parents/primary caregivers, and hospital staff
- A sense of normalcy and hope during difficult times
- A respite for the parent or primary caregiver
These experiences are designed to uplift spirits, reduce anxiety, and foster resilience, reminding children that they are more than their diagnosis.
In paediatric wards, we create a joyful, fun, immersive camp atmosphere, introducing engaging activities designed specifically for young patients to participate in fully, allowing them to escape their hospital beds, doctors, nurses and treatments. Beyond the children, we extend the camp spirit to parents and primary caregivers, encouraging them to join in the camp fun, offering them moments of respite. Through these initiatives, JFF ensures that the magic of camp reaches beyond our physical camp grounds, transforming lives and reinforcing possibility.
Sibling Camps – A Place To Heal
Every child deserves the joy of adventure, the magic of belonging, and the freedom to simply be a kid.
While a child’s battle with a serious illness takes centre stage, their siblings often face a quiet struggle of their own, balancing fear, sacrifice, and the weight of emotions they may not fully understand. Known as the ‘Silent Sufferers, ’ we believe that these children deserve a place where they, too, can be seen, heard, supported, and simply allowed to be kids.
Our specialised camp experiences provide these siblings with a community of peers who truly understand their journey, a safe space to share, laugh, and rediscover their own sense of joy and resilience. Through adventure and emotional support, we give them moments to recharge, ask questions and allay their fears, knowing they are not alone in their experience, ensuring that the siblings receive the care and connection they deserve. We create a healing environment where these children can build friendships, process their emotions and find strength in a way that feels uniquely their own. Our camps bring hope to the ones who stand bravely beside their brothers and sisters every day.
Support Through Grief: For siblings coping with loss, the camp provides a safe and compassionate space to process emotions, share memories, and begin healing free from judgment or pressure.
Camp-On-The-Move Programmes
Bringing the Joy of Camp to Communities Across South Africa
At Just Footprints Foundation, the impact of camp continues long after the last campfire has burnt out through our Camp-On-The-Move (COTM) programmes. These dynamic outreach initiatives bring the transformative spirit of camp directly to children at beneficiary community organisations, schools, and care centres they know well.
COTM programmes offers safe, inclusive experiences that spark hope, build resilience, and foster meaningful connections among children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges. By delivering camp magic in familiar settings, children rediscover the power of play, imagination, and belonging especially vital in the wake of stigma and uncertainty. Even more importantly they give staff and other children who did not attend camp, a chance to experience for themselves the magic of camp.
Our pre-outreach training for beneficiary staff has been enthusiastically integrated into their own programmes, ensuring that the camp’s philosophy continues to shape organisations long after these outreach sessions conclude.
More than a day of fun, COTM is a catalyst for healing, growth, and community. Successfully implemented across Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, the programme has exciting expansion plans underway into other regions of South Africa, deepening our impact and celebrating the courage of every child we serve.
Family Weekend Camps
At Just Footprints Foundation, our Family Weekend Camps provide free, transformative experiences for children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and life challenges, together with their families.
More than recreation, these weekends foster resilience, independence, and hope, helping families reconnect and rediscover fun beyond medical limitations.
Held over three days, the camps combine inclusive, culturally rooted programmes with professional medical support. Children embrace the magic of Camp Footprints through play, laughter, and friendship, while parents and caregivers find space to connect, share, and build lasting support networks. Activities, from relays, tug of war, drumming, creative workshops and fun activities following our Challenge by Choice philosophy, empowering children to participate safely and confidently.
Families consistently report feeling seen, supported, and renewed. They leave with stronger coping strategies, improved resilience, and deeper community bonds that extend far beyond the campfire. By nurturing both children and caregivers, Family Weekend Camps spark healing, connection, and transformation, strengthening families and reducing isolation across communities.
Care For The Carer Mental Wellness
Supporting Those Who Give So Much
Caregivers are the quiet heroes of our communities, offering strength and compassion to children and families facing serious illness, disability, and life challenges. Yet, in giving so much, they often neglect their own well-being.
Our Care for the Carer Programme is designed to restore, uplift, and empower these caregivers through wellness retreats, resilience workshops, peer support, and creative healing sessions. Delivered in retreat spaces and community centres, each experience provides practical tools for stress management, burnout prevention, and emotional renewal.
Participants report reduced stress and fatigue, stronger peer connections, and renewed energy in their caregiving roles. By nurturing caregivers, we strengthen the entire care ecosystem, ensuring that compassion is sustained with resilience and hope.

- Meeting incredible children who inspire with their courage and enthusiasm;
- Making lifelong friendships with fellow crew members

- Gain unforgettable experiences
As a proud member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network Partner Camp Programme in the USA, founded by Paul Newman, we uphold the highest standards of safety and care. Our affiliation ensures access to international medical and psychosocial expertise, as well as impactful resources and programming tailored to children with serious health challenges. At camp, we have a ratio of one camp crew member to two campers. So, if we have 50 campers, we need a trained camp crew of 25 to support and mentor the campers. At Just Footprints Foundation, we intentionally train new crew for every camp to create meaningful opportunities for unemployed youth. By rotating teams, we open doors for more young people to gain hands-on experience, build confidence, and explore potential career paths.
Our comprehensive crew training covers essential skills such as leadership, hospitality, basic medical awareness, risk assessment and team building. These sessions are designed to prepare crew members to work effectively across diverse cultural, linguistic and age groups, ensuring every camper is supported with care, empathy, and professionalism based on our three main pillars: LOVE, SAFETY and RESPECT. Our pre-camp training model has earned high praise from hospital and beneficiary organisation leadership and staff, who attend our training workshops and commend its relevance and transformative approach. Beyond immediate outcomes, the training has fostered lasting growth among their teams, empowering staff with renewed confidence, empathy, and practical tools that continue to enrich the lives of the children in their care.
The magic of camp starts with YOU!
